Our 2nd and 3rd distribution happened today. Driving out away from the city, it was a little less populated and villages and fields lined the road. We passed a market where carts and bikes bringing loads of bananas into a central area, gathered. I've never seen so many bananas in one place!
The temperature rises quickly to about 28C as the sun gets up into the sky and the humidity is high. We are thankful for our air conditioned bus!
At Gaibandha, the children were dressed in their brightly coloured, new clothes and seated in several rows of a stadium, the front of which is faced with wire. Parents and siblings all pressed up against it to see what was happening until directed off to a seating area.
It was the first time that Mike, our team leader would take photos of groups of 50 children and it took some time to get the set up organized. The children were extremely good to follow directions and stay in their places. Although the seating made it easy to get all the kids seen in the photo, the short distance from the camera, due to the wire made it difficult.
We sang a couple of action songs with them to help them relax which they seemed to enjoy and once we actually began the photos we moved along at a better pace.
Eric and Nancy distributed the kits and were the lucky recipients of the huge smiles when it was all over.
In the afternoon, we visited a rice mill on the outskirts of Rangpur for the next distribution. This venue was more difficult to set up for photos as there was only flat ground so Mike had to stand on a wall to manage the large group photos and the sinking sun was an issue as well. It was a long day for the children but in the end their big smiles shone as they headed off with their bedkits.
